A Sample from Bargain Princess:

We followed the trail along a dry creekbed for most of the morning, then Chi stopped. I strained to see anything in the rocks ahead, but couldn’t. Evers and I joined her to see what her sensors had picked up.
“Life forms in the rocks ahead. Could be three, could be more, hiding.”
“Ditto,” confirmed Evers. “Metal, too. Could be swords, guns, something like that.”
Bahkti said, “The tribes have single-shot percussion weapons. Some may be rifles.”
“Stun five,” I ordered. “We don’t know that they’re dangerous, or even that they’re the enemy.”
“Copy,” said three voices simultaneously. We adjusted our blasters, lowered our visors, and started slowly forward.

A Sample from Bargain Princess Parts 2 & 3:

We flew from Tashara to Aldebaran II, a beautiful oasis planet, for a little R&R. Our leave was short, though – just enough time for Commander Phillips to scope out a mission on Aldebaran III, a rocky little mining planet. My job would be to pull out an informant who’d had to run for the hills. Smugglers were hot on his tail, and there was likely to be some shooting.
When it comes to a firefight, there’s no one I’d rather have guarding my flank than Chi. I asked Phillips if I could take her with me, and he said she’d already volunteered.
Yeah, there was shooting, all right. ...

And then the morning came. I walked out to the landing field to meet the shuttle. As the dust settled, porters ran to begin unloading, the sally door opened, and the ramp lowered to the ground. Chi was the first person off. I have never seen so beautiful a sight as Chi, in combat dress and backpack, walking toward me in the morning sunlight, toting her duffel in one hand and a Mark IV blaster in the other. And the smile she gave me – well, I had never seen her smile so bright in all the years I’d known her.

I’d like to say I was a gentleman and rushed to carry her gear, but no, I took my time to walk up to her because I couldn’t get enough of the sight of her walking toward me.
“Can I help you with that?”
She kept walking. “Nah, I got it. I’m balanced.”
I fell in beside her. “Flight okay?”
“Kinda slow. Good to get some fresh air.”
“Got a place for you to stay.”
Still walking, she looked up at me and raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

A sample from Bargain Princess:

As we followed the menial, I nudged Bahkti. “What were they saying?”
He whispered to me, “I don’t know. They were speaking in their family language, which is used when they don’t want to be understood. But my guess is, he was asking her if you made her yours.”
So I asked, “What do you mean? I thought she declared herself, and the other women, as my possessions.”
“Well, there is possession, and there is ownership, and their is making something yours. ...”
Now I was puzzled, and I’m sure it showed.
Still following the menial, we began to ascend a flight of stairs. Bahkti continued, “Suppose you buy a blaster, and you intend to resell it. You possess it, but you don’t intend to make it yours. Or you could buy a blaster, test fire it just to see how it performs, and then sell it.”
“Yeah, people do that all the time.”
Bahkti nodded. “But suppose you like the way it performs, like the way it handles, and you decide to keep it for yourself. You holster it and carry it on your hip, you keep it ready for when you need it, and you come to depend on its presence. You’ve ‘made it yours,’ so to speak.”
“Ah, ...” I nodded. “... and I have not made her mine.”
He glanced at me. “That is my impression.”
We turned a corner. My thoughts went back to my encounter with Queenie outside the arena walls. No, I hadn’t “made her mine.” I hadn’t even “test fired” her, other than at stun one. And considering a father’s point of view, it was probably a good thing I hadn’t.
